The Highwaymen – Review

The Highwaymen is based on a true story. This film was released in the same year, although I actually watched it in 2021. This Netflix film tells the story of how Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harelson), two old cops who are actually retired, are reassigned as street cops. (The Highwaymen). They were relied on as secret weapons to hunt down the popular criminals of the 1930s at that time, Bonnie and Clyde.

A little about Bonnie and Clyde, they were a pair of famous criminals in Texas, United States at that time. This fame to the point that they have a very large fanbase. Even their deaths were accompanied by a crowd of fans when Bonnie and Clyde were shot dead and their bodies carried in a car through town.

Bonnie and Clyde’s popularity at that time was quite reasonable. Their action of robbing banks in America seemed to represent the grudge of the little people who were often oppressed by the banks. That is the reason why many lower class people in the countryside idolize these two couples. However, their hearts were quite cruel and did not hesitate to finish off the innocent policemen on the streets. They would kill the police on duty if they met on their way, to avoid being caught and thrown in prison.

Frank’s answer then becomes the key message of my lesson. Facing the emotional Henry, Frank calmly said that he might not have been born with a bad soul, but now he is a bad person. After all, what Clyde and Bonnie did is unacceptable, let alone justified. It is this second scene that then gives me an implicit message.

Clyde, who stole a chicken, may have reasons for which he can be pitied. It is said that Clyde stole a chicken because he and his family were starving. Then, a message popped up in my mind based on what Frank said earlier. If a bad person is actually a good person, then for a second he will never think of doing evil. Clyde may have stolen a chicken out of urgent need, but what he did afterwards was still a very heinous crime.

Well, just like the Joker, The Highwaymen are a work of art too. For me, I can also learn from this lesson thanks to the development of conflict and a neat plot. Plus the acting of Kevin Costner, who plays Frank Hamer, who managed to bring the emotions of a police officer to a very cruel fugitive partner. This film successfully provides counter value to the messages of the Joker film, where the crime is not something that should be tolerated. Top Movie
