The film Over the Moon opens with the scene of Fei Fei, who is still a child, having a picnic with his parents. At that moment, Fei Fei’s mother told the story of the Moon Goddess Chang’e who is still on the Moon waiting for her lover. This also made Fei Fei believe about it and have dreams of meeting Chang’e.

When Fei Fei was a teenager, his mother was said to have died from an illness. Several years later, Fei Fei’s father found another woman to replace his mother. Even Fei Fei, who was very fond of his late mother, started to feel annoyed by this.

The start of the main conflict occurred during a dinner with the whole family as well as Fei Fei’s father’s lover. At that moment, his entire family thought that Chang’e was just a myth, including his father. Fei Fei was disappointed by this and thought that his father had completely forgotten his late mother.

This then made Fei Fei create a rocket to go to the Moon and prove Chang’e’s existence to his father. Even after arriving on the Moon he managed to find Chang’e, Fei Fei in fact had to face various kinds of conflicts while in space. Movie Review

The storyline in Over the Moon actually feels familiar with the plot carried by the Disney film Coco (2017). The reason is, these two films both raise the culture or mythology of a country to become a means of proving the main character to his family.

Even so, you can still enjoy a very light storyline in this film because it doesn’t completely resemble Coco. Fei Fei’s adventure while on the Moon is also full of lessons and is filled with a number of heart-warming moments. Of course, this film will be very suitable to be watched with relatives.

This film, directed by Glen Keane, won the “Best Animated Short Film” trophy at the 2018 Oscars through the short animated film Dear Basketball (2017). Not only that, Keane, who is known to have worked on The Little Mermaid (1989), also participated as an animator in Over the Moon. So, there shouldn’t be any doubt about the animation in this film.

You are guaranteed to be spoiled with animation with very neat movements and designs in this film. In addition, the coloring in each scene is very soft, so it spoils our eyes while watching.

One of the most memorable soundtracks in this film is “Ultraluminary” sung by Phillipa Soo as the voice of Chang’e. The reason is, the song has a K-Pop musical nuance so that the depiction of Chang’e character in this film is different from that in mythology.
