The film, directed by Frank Darabont, presents a life story in a detention house filled with crime, hatred, and friendship. This film won 7 Oscar nominations. Although not successful in getting an Oscar, this film received much praise from critics of the world film.
Set in the 1940s, this film tells the story of a banker, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who was accused of murdering his wife, even though he insisted not to commit the murder. As a result, Andy had to be imprisoned for 20 years in the Shawshank State prison. At first, Andy was very quiet and never communicated with prisoners in prison. He was also persecuted several times by other prisoners and a gang of prison rapists called “The Sisters”.
Andy began to get annoyed with everything that happened to him, until he planned something and asked for some items from Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding (Morgan Freeman), a prisoner who could carry any item from outside the prison. For starters Andy only asked for a small hammer. Red jokes that Andy will only spend decades to escape from prison using the small hammer. Andy said that he only did his hobby to make chess pieces. Movie Review One time, Andy was assigned to the prison library, along with a senior prisoner named Brooks (James Whitmore) who had been detained for almost 50 years in that prison. His duties in the library led him to work he had not imagined in a prison. Andy, who initially only helped Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), to overcome his financial problems. But thanks to his success in helping Captain Hadley, Andy was trusted to take care of the tax affairs of all prison officials. Including the warden, who uses Andy to do money laundering.
One time, Shawshank prison received new inmates. He is Tommy (Gil Bellows) who was charged with theft. Tommy’s behavior was a bit annoying but very passionate, making him liked by prisoners including Andy and Red. With Andy’s help, Tommy also successfully passed the state exam. Once, when Red told Tommy’s story to Tommy, he recalled the fact that he had been imprisoned with a murderer who killed a woman and his mistress was believed to be the real killer of Andy’s wife. Hearing this fact, Andy tried to say that to the Chief Warden, Norton (Bob Gunton), but Norton ignored it to make Andy rebel and finally locked in solitary confinement. The chaos that occurred in Andy’s life made him even more aware that he had to do something to get out of the prison.
Andy’s smart character is the point of how this film can be very interesting. We will be presented with Andy’s quiet character, but can be a good mentor to his friends. Andy also has a very clever sense that he managed to make a few distractions from all the escape plans that he created and amaze us. Red’s character, played by Morgan Freeman, with his trademark dialogue gives the impression of wisdom and can be a friend to tell stories and complain.
Although it was aired 25 years ago, this film can still be enjoyed well. A setting that focuses on one place, Shawshank State Prison, allows us to see the dark side of prison life. This film also focuses us on the story of a prisoner’s life journey in prison. How they can survive in prison and how life outside prison is very far from the life they imagined.
Many important messages about life conveyed in this film. One of them is when we complain about the current situation and want to get out of a routine that we don’t like, but when we get out of the routine, it is not certain that the new life we live in will be better than the routine of life that we have gone through before.
